FAQs
Are you still shipping orders?
We plan to continue shipping orders through USPS. If anything changes we will post that information online and update this site.
How can I begin using Five in a Row without being able to order books from the library?
You can purchase books on amazon or book packages through Rainbow Resource. While we always prefer that you have an actual book in hand to read to your child and study the illustrations from…we are all sacrificing things at this moment and making it work the best way we can. Many of the books can be found in video recording online that you can watch together and then use the manual to complete the lessons for each unit study. You can also connect with friends or family members and have them share books they own with you and your children.
If you do choose to order and add a few books to your family library, remember that you have lessons in the FIAR manual for at least one week (you could easily stretch that to two weeks) for each new book you purchase. So 4 new books could easily take you through 6 weeks of school.
Epic! at getepic.com could be a good resource during this time. The first month is free and it is $7.99 monthly after that. You have instant access to over 35,000 books and learning videos. There are at least a few Five in a Row and Before books listed…also this would be perfect for go-along books or adding videos are resources to FIAR lessons when you might normally have ordered books from the library.
I’ve done Five in a Row and own several (or many) of the books but do not have any new books to continue lessons without using the library or purchasing more.
You can search online for video recordings to use until the libraries reopen. You can connect with a friend or family member and have them share books they own with you and your children. One of the best options is to re-row books you own and have already rowed! This provides something familiar during this potentially stressful time. Because there are many lessons for each subject you can row lessons that you didn’t do before! You can also find online resources to dig deeper into new lessons or interests.

Another great option is to add a new book each month to your collection via amazon and order a Five in a Row Mini Unit for ages 2-12. This will allow you to focus one week to several weeks of learning together as a family on one book with lessons provided for everyone!
Ideas
Wonderful ideas you can try for fun during this crazy season (or you can use if you don’t have access to any new FIAR books to row):
You might choose to use this time to have your student write their own story in a similar fashion to a FIAR picture book you’ve previously rowed. If they’ve kept a list of Choices a Writer Can Make and Choices an Artist Can Make now is a great time to reference those and let them pick and choose different things from their list to incorporate into their story! They DO NOT need to be able to write, to write their own story, Dictation is a wonderful way to “write.” They’ll get to focus on a title page, a dedication page, an author bio, create their own illustrations, write or dictate the story, and create cover art! This project could easily last several weeks or even a month for a young child.
You could take a week to create an art show! Pick an art project Monday-Thursday from four different Five in a Row picture books that you’ve rowed before. Create artwork each day. During that week, plan a family art show for Friday. Including where and how to display artwork, a tasting menu of treats, and invitations. On Friday, set up the show and enjoy the event as a family! Video call grandparents, family members, or friends to join in the fun from afar!
