How a Homeschool Mom Handles a Superstorm

We pull out our copy of Storm in the Night to read while we snuggle on the couch and talk about our fears – how real they are, how it’s okay to have them and how we had them as a kid too.

We read Mr Gumpy’s Motor Car and talk about the fun they had in that rain and how different that is from Superstorm Sandy.

We draw the shape of the storm on paper (scaled to our map or globe) and lay it over the country where it is affecting people… then we follow it and move it as it goes.

We pull out our Five in a Row Digital Nature Study and record the weather in our nature journal.

all have a “fall readiness” program going on!

Can you see the signs? One immense benefit, educationally speaking, of taking nature walks through each of the seasons, is to observe “changes” as they occur, to spend time thinking about them—why is the grass turning brown?  Why are the leaves colored, or falling?  Why are the clouds so low and gray?  Why is the air so cool, when it was so warm just a week ago?  What are those animals doing anyway?
