309-003Hi!  I’m Melissa Crabtree, and I’m the Community Manager here at Five in a Row. I’ve designed this no-fluff page to help you understand the foundation of Five in a Row as it is designed to be used. (The heart of Five in a Row is all out on the main product pages, but some of us like a skin-and-bones version.) This is a list of ALL Five in a Row products divided by level, a glossary of Five in a Row terms and a summary at the bottom of how it is to be used.  If you will read all the way through, I believe you’ll have a good understanding of Five in a Row and how it works!

The products are divided into:

  • required resources
  • add-on resources – not required but very helpful in getting the most out of your FIAR experience
  • not product specific, but additional resources appropriate for students at that particular age level
  • noted which are digital (D) and which are in print (P)  – not all products are available both ways

Digital products may be ordered through our digital store.

Print products may be added to your cart on the appropriate page for each product level, but will be processed by RainbowResource.com as a separate transaction. (Notice the two options on the CART menu.)

You can see each of these products explained on the page for the appropriate level or the additional resources page (linked under the PRODUCTS tab above).

There is a glossary with short explanations at the bottom of this page. You’ll find much more on the main product pages.

You will find it helpful to download the samples as they contain a thorough introduction and a full unit for you to get a good feel for the program.  Five in a Row is a unique product, but worth taking a bit to get to know it!

 steve-janeHomeschool Encouragement for Parents   D

We all need some inspiration from time to time! Steve and Jane Lambert have been encouraging homeschoolers on their journey since 1994. They’ve been where you are, and have lots of wisdom to share with you! These Five in a Row audio files have been recorded at major state homeschooling conventions around the United States and Canada. Each message has been chosen because we believe you’ll enjoy it for its wisdom, humor and encouragement shared by Steve.  These are appropriate for any family presently homeschooling or considering homeschooling, and make great gifts for friends or grown children who need some encouragement!

unit: a group of lessons written for a specific book selection, contains lessons in science, social studies, language arts, art, geography and applied math when they obviously present themselves in the book selection

lesson: a topic that presents itself in the book selection, contains information you need to know in order to explore this topic with your student or enough to be a jumping off point for further exploration on your own, not a lesson plan with a checklist

book selection: the book on which a specific Five in a Row unit is based

literature pack: a group of selected *in-print* books provided as one product

digital product: an electronic product we sell, you will receive an email after purchase which contains a download link, these are licensed for your family only

Bible Supplement: a collection of Bible and character lessons based on the book selections, for volumes 1-3 (lessons are included in vol. 4 and Beyond FIAR)

Nature Study: a digital printable product designed to encourage your family in the exploration of the beautiful world around us, contains scavenger hunts, bird study, art, poems and songs and more based on each season, truly a product for all ages

Holiday: Through the Seasons: a book full of history, activity ideas and recipes for making memories with your family each holiday, not a typical FIAR style unit, not Pinterest  😉

Putting it all together:

You purchase the manual or digital unit, and either purchase or borrow the book selection you want to study for the week. You select the lessons (from the unit) that you want to explore with your student.  Generally, you read the book selection and explore a lesson or two for each day of the week.  You explore those through field trips, library books, internet sites or videos, etc.  You or your student might record your student’s learning or use a Fold n Learn on pages in the Notebook Builder.  You add a cooking lesson from the Cookbook and the character lesson from the Bible Supplement.  You can enhance your nature and holiday learning with the Nature Study or Holiday: Through the Seasons products or during an off week in a new season or holiday, you can enjoy a break in the routine and enjoy the as a family.

P.S.  For Before Five in a Row, you wouldn’t necessarily read it five days in a row.  You’d also do much less academic lessons than in the other levels.  For Beyond Five in a  Row, you do the lessons based on chapters rather than the entire book.  And you obviously don’t read the entire book five days in a row.

That’s how you do Five in a Row, my friends!
